Armenians have been considered an ethnic people since the 18th century. First, there was a religious community (speaking different languages) called Armenian. However, Armenians have always called themselves Armenians. In the church, they worshiped in the ancient Iranian language (Pahlavi language). The word hay was coined at the end of the 17th century.
